Social economy has the potential for becoming the third major economic sector

Social economy* can be a bigger player in emerging and developing countries with the right support, including from the EU.  Support is crucial, but it needs to be provided in a sensitive way.

This message was given from the EESC Section for External Relations’ (REX) meeting, 29 January, Brussels, which brought together experts from major international organisations  and representatives of main European social economy organisations and EU officials. The aim was identifying areas that the EU could enhance its support to help this economic sector  grow and be more efficient, both in and beyond Europe.

Social economy as an equal third sector

In many countries legal and other conditions help prevent these organisations from reaching their full potential ie legal structures, access to capital, training in  business are needed.
